Memorial Day Weekend Ideas

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. The weekend is also the unofficial start of summer. This year we will be celebrating differently. Because of the stay-at-home order restrictions, there will be no parades or in person ceremonies. That doesn't mean you have to forego enjoying the weekend.

Watch the National Memorial Day Concert on Sunday, May 24, at 7:00 p.m. on WTTW or stream it on PBS.org, YouTube, or Facebook featuring new performances and tributes filmed around the country to honor all of our American heroes.Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the traditional live concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol will not be held.

To commemorate Memorial Day from home and the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, Ancestry® is presenting its "Parade of Heroes," a virtual event hosted by Kathie Lee Gifford with a musical performance by Tori Kelly. Watch it live on Facebook on Monday, May 25, at 10 a.m.

Watch war movies and television programs on Hoopla. Read an ebook about World War II on eMediaLibrary or listen to patriotic music on Hoopla.

Cook out with your family at home and try some recipes from these barbeque and grilling books on Hoopla. An alternative is to order from a local restaurant for pick up or delivery.
