Honoring Hamilton Bohannon
Hamilton Bohannon, disco percussion pioneer, passed away on April 24 at the age of 78. Hamilton Bohannon who became known as Bohannon started his music career as a drummer for a young Stevie Wonder, and then was hired by Motown Records as a bandleader. When he went solo, one of his biggest hits was "Let's start the dance" which was featured on the Studio 54 soundtrack. Bohannon created what he called the "four-on-the-floor" beat that became a foundation for much disco, house and hip-hop music. His tracks have been sampled by Jay Z, Paul Johnson, Digable Planets, and Snoop Dog.
