Honoring Tony Allen

Tony Allen, Nigerian drummer and Afrobeat pioneer, passed away on April 30 at the age of 79.  Allen was the drummer and musical director of Fela Kuti's band Africa 70 in the 1960s and '70s.  Afrobeat is a pulsating West African style of music with horns, soaring vocals, and a driving groove combined with American funk and jazz.

He later worked with singer Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz, the Clash's Paul Simonon, and guitarist Simon Tong of the Verve who together recorded as The Good, the Bad & the Queen.  Tony Allen released his last album, Rejoice, in March which was a collaboration with Hugh Masekula.
