Honoring Harold Reid, The Statler Brothers Singer

Harold Reid, the bass singer and songwriter for the award winning group, The Statler Brothers, passed away on April 25 at the age of 80. The Statler Brothers vocal quartet began in 1955 first in Gospel Music then moved into Country and sang backup for Johnny Cash.  The group was inducted into the Gospel Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

We are looking for kids in grades 1-6 to share funny stories with the community. Please come up with a short 1-2 paragraph story with many of the nouns, verbs, adverbs, and other words you would like replaced with just the words [Noun], [Verb], [Adverb], [Place name] and so on in their place.

Online Program - What are You Watching Wednesday

Get together with others on Wednesday, April 22 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss what you are watching. Whether it is a great movie you have discovered, TV show you have seriously started binge watching, or how you discovered a way to find great content, it doesn't matter! We would love for you to share what you have discovered using the library's Hoopla service!

Honoring Brian Dennehy

Veteran movie, stage, and television actor Brian Dennehy passed away on April 15 at the age of 81.  He won two Best Lead Actor in a Play Tony Awards for Death of a Salesman and Long Day's Journey into Night.  Also, he was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame.  Some of his movies, include First Blood, Presumed Innocent, Cocoon, and F/X.  He had a recurring role in The Blacklist tv series.

It is a good time to try a new streaming video service.  Many services are offering longer free trials.  Some with 30 days free trials to try are:

Netflix: Tv shows and movies. 2020 Oscar nominated films, The Irishman and The Two Popes; The Crown Season 3

(Once the building is reopened you can check out one of our Rokus to use the library's Netflix subscription.)

Acorn TV (Promo code FREE30): British tv. The Brokenwood Mysteries (first six seasons)

Shudder (Promo code SHUTIN): For horror fans

Note that most services require a credit card to sign up. Mark your calendar for when the trial will expire so you cancel it by then.  Netflix subscribers receive a three day notice of when the free trial will expire.

Available for both Android and Apple devices, the Brainfuse app is an easy way to learn anywhere, anytime. To use, you will need to have created a username and password on Brainfuse (click here to do this). With the app, you can get live tutoring, view your message center, take notes, track tasks, use Snap-n-Send, and more!

Free Workouts: 3 Ways to Stay Active At-Home

  • Yoga with Adriene: Adriene is a renown Yoga instructor and YouTube sensation. Known for her gentle and friendly presence, she makes Yoga accessible, easy, and enjoyable for all skills levels. You can dive right into her YouTube channel to find videos, or you can visit her website and get started with a specific 30-day program. Note: some courses on her website will have a fee, but the majority of her videos (over 500) are free to watch. 

  • The 7-Minute Workout: The 7-minute workout requires only a wall and chair to be completed. (You can add hand weights to up the intensity). Start by reading this article about the workout in the New York Times. If you're ready to try it, you can simply use a smart phone timer, or download a dedicated app that will prompt you with each exercise. 

  • Couch to 5K: Take advantage of the spring weather by walking/running. Like its name says, Couch to 5K is a program designed to prepare you for a 5K walk/run by starting at scratch. The app will tell you how far to walk/run each day, and an average week consists of 3-4 workouts of about 30 minutes each. There are many sites that will outline a similar couch to 5k approach if you prefer to track your own progress without using an app.

Tribute to Kenny Rogers

Award winning singer-songwriter, Kenny Rogers, passed away recently at the age of 81. The country artist who crossed over into multiple music genres had a career that spanned six decades. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and received the Country Music Association's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Zoom 101: Practice Zooming With Us

Zoom is platform that combines video conferencing, online meetings, chat, and mobile collaboration. More and more organizations are using Zoom to provide their services remotely, and you may have had family or friends ask to meet on Zoom. 

Because the library will be hosting programs and classes on Zoom, we want to give you the opportunity to practice using it. You can test your microphone, see yourself on camera, learn to chat, and more. Once you feel comfortable with Zoom, you can leave the practice room. 

The dates for the practice rooms are below with links to registration. You need to register so that you receive an email with the Zoom meeting invite. This invite will come 1 day before the event and it will include a direct URL link to the Zoom meeting. You only need to register for 1 time slot.

Pen Pals for Seniors
