Sully

Three minutes into a flight out of New York's LaGuardia airport on a cold January day in 2009 and with 155 souls aboard, Captain "Sully" Sullenberger's plane hit a flock of birds causing catastrophic engine failure. Essentially gliding at 2800 feet above one of the most populated areas in the world, Sully had only seconds to decide where to land. Try to make it back to the runway and jeopardize even more lives on the ground, or ditch the plane in the Hudson River?

This suspenseful film is based on a true story. Sully is directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, and Laura Linney.

The Father

The Father (Rated PG-13) is a terrific movie worthy of an Oscar. The acting by Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman are fabulous. It is a serious drama on a difficult subject, dementia. I could not help but feel for all those adult children out there who are making the sacrifices to be full-time caregiver for a parent going through this. One outstanding thing about this movie is that it allows you to see this through the eyes of the person with dementia (Hopkins). I was confused which scene was the truth and which was the illusion, because they all seemed real.

Available for check out in both DVD and Blu-Ray.

Promising Young Woman

Promising Young Woman (Rated R) is a suspense, thriller kind of movie. I really liked the actress, Carey Mulligan, who plays Cassie. She is a young 20 something, super smart, pretty, medical school dropout who works in a small coffee shop by day. And then at night, she goes out to local bars and pretends to be drunk so that she gets guys to try and take her home to have sex with her. One day, an old former med school classmate comes by the coffee shop and asks her out. This person talks about other classmates from med school and how successful they have become. He doesn't understand why she's working in a coffee shop and why she dropped out of medical school. This opportunity opens Cassie up to reveal her problems to him and the sweet smell of revenge that is to come.

The Gift

A little bit older of a movie but is still really good. This thriller makes you double check that your doors are closed and has a good hook that keeps pulling you in.

The Gift (Rated R) is available for checkout on DVD.

Doc Martin

This is a terrific TV show. While some of the characters can seem a bit corny (like the town police officer who reminds me of Barney Fife from The Andy Griffith Show), the humor is mixed with drama as Doc Martin has to save the day when medical emergencies occur every show.

Also compelling is the on and off relationship between Doctor Ellingham and his sweetheart Louisa (Caroline Catz). But what I like best is where they live: every show takes place in a beautiful seaside English port where each day is sunny and gorgeous. I think it's is worth watching for the scenery alone.

Watch all nine seasons of Doc Martin (2004-) on Hoopla today. Start with season 1

Let Him Go

George & Margaret Blackledge (played by Kevin Costner and Diane Lane), are a retired sheriff and his wife living with their son, daughter-in-law and grandson, on a Montana ranch. Their son, James dies in a horse riding accident and then many years later, their daughter-in-law, Lorna , remarries Donnie Weboy. Margaret sees that this union is very abusive and wants to get her ex daughter-in-law and grandson back. Lorna, Donnie and her son are taken away by Donnie's family. And George and Margaret must go to long measures to locate their grandson. Neither Donnie's family or George & Margaret are willing to let the boy go and George must rescue his grandson before it's too late. Very good movie.

Horizon Line

If you enjoy edge-of-your-seat thrillers, this movie is for you! Sara and Jackson are a young couple who board a small single-engine plane to fly to a friend's tropical island wedding. The pilot, who is another friend of theirs, is not in the best of health. Nothing bad could ever happen, right? Very shortly after takeoff, the pilot suffers a heart attack which proves to be fatal. Sara and Jackson have no idea where they are or how they can possibly land the plane. All they can see is miles and miles of ocean in every direction.

Watch Horizon Line (PG-13) available on DVD.

The Last Right

I really enjoyed watching the movie called The Last Right on Hoopla. It was a quirky, light-hearted comedy set in Ireland. The story begins with a death in the family that causes Daniel Murphy to be flying from the US back home to his family's home in Ireland to attend his mother's funeral. A chance encounter with the passenger sitting next to him on the plane sets the entire movie in motion. I really enjoyed this movie because it reminded me of an updated 2021 version of  Rain Man. It is an interesting adventure with two brothers, a friend and a stranger and their adventure across Ireland not knowing that the police are in hot pursuit of them. It's about doing what's right for FAMILY.

Good Will Hunting

This terrific movie features the great pair Matt Damon and Robin Williams. Good Will Hunting (1997, rated R) has drama, comedy, romance—everything anyone would want. I sure wish I had a math brain like Will (Matt Damon); I would not be cleaning floors. It's cool how Will and his doctor (Robin Williams) end up helping each other but only after each can open up to the other.

I'm sure there were other important themes going on in this film however I must admit it's over my head. But I was drawn into this story nonetheless and I was pulling for Will to find happiness (and a better job).

Watch the film that garnered two Oscars: Robin Williams (best supporting actor) and Ben Affleck and Matt Damon (best original screenplay). Check out Good Will Hunting on Hoopla today.

The Founder

I highly recommend this film about the true story of the founding of McDonald's Corporation. It's about an ambitious malt shake mixer salesman, Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton) and his chance encounter with Mac and Dick McDonald in 1954.

Mac and Dick have a highly successful hamburger stand in San Bernardino, CA. These two brothers have developed a speedy assembly line for producing hamburgers at a rate of 30 seconds from beginning to end. They changed the idea of a food stand or drive-in and came up with a cost-efficient model that is highly effective in reducing overhead costs. Ray Kroc sees the potential of this and goes into partnership with franchising the company, McDonald's.

The Founder (2016, rated PG-13) is the story of how Ray Kroc turned this concept into the billion-dollar empire that we have today. Check out the DVD today.

1945

I recommend the black and white film 1945. Set in a small village in Hungary in 1945 just as World War II finished, it opens on a summer day as the town prepares for a wedding. Two Jewish men get off the train with two large crates and go through town. The town's residents are wondering who these two men are and why they have returned. Some of the town's people were part of a coverup in getting a prominent Jewish family deported and taking over their possessions. Many of these people have such profound guilt, leading to irrational decisions while they think these two strangers are there to take back what was taken from this family. What happens in the town all takes place in a few hours.

This film was released in 2017, winning several awards at film festivals. In Hungarian with English subtitles. Watch 1945 on Hoopla today.

It’s a Wonderful Life

This is the quintessential Christmas movie that everyone has seen or should see. George Bailey (James Stewart) has seen his life's dreams dashed one after another, and in a moment of despair, contemplates taking his own life. An angel is sent to show George just how different the world would be if he were never born. Check out this timeless classic directed by Frank Capra and starring James Stewart and Donna Reed.

It's a Wonderful Life (1946, PG) is available as a part of the binge box called "A Classic Christmas Collection" which also includes Christmas in Connecticut, Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Carol, and White Christmas.

The Great Alaskan Race

I highly recommend the movie, The Great Alaskan Race (2019, rated PG). It is the heroic true story of a race against time during an arctic blizzard. In 1925, there was a diphtheria epidemic that made all the children of Nome, Alaska, deathly ill. The town desperately needed the anti-toxin serum to stop this epidemic. This is the story of the Serum Run.

Twenty brave mushers and 150 courageous dogs traveled 700 miles through -80 temperatures to bring the serum back to Nome to save the children. What should have taken 25 days to travel by dogsled was done in a record of 5.5 days by these heroic mushers and dogs. This proved that anything was possible with hope and courage. The Iditarod Race is done in remembrance of the 1925 Serum Run.

Apollo 13

"Houston, we have a problem." In April 1970, three astronauts were headed for the moon when an oxygen tank exploded, affecting life support and propulsion. With an all-star cast, Apollo 13 (1995, PG) puts you right there in the lunar module as well as in the room at Houston flight control as the engineers work frantically to bring these men home alive. Apollo 13 was directed by Ron Howard and stars Tom Hanks, Ed Harris, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, and Gary Sinise.

Fans of Apollo 13 may also enjoy The Martian with Matt Damon. Apollo 13 is available as a DVD as a part of the Binge Box called "Never Travel with Tom Hanks," which includes three other movies: Cast Away, Captain Phillips, and Sully.

All Good Things

I recommend the movie All Good Things (2010, rated R), based on a true story from the early 80s about New York real estate heir David Marks (Ryan Gosling) and the disappearance of his wife Katie (Kirsten Dunst). Gosling does an amazing job with the transformation of his character in how he changes over the years of his marriage. He tries to outrun his past, but his family and wealth bring him back into the family business.

Watch All Good Things on Hoopla today or check out the DVD. The inspiration for the movie may be stranger than fiction: read about the strange case of Robert Durst.
